It’s that time of year again. Thanksgiving is just around the corner. This sparks the question: what are you thankful for the most? Many people are lucky enough to be thankful for their families, friends, a roof over their heads, and clean drinkable water. But why be thankful? Being thankful helps you get through the hardships in life, just think of something (or someone) you love and that can help you overcome the struggles.

For Senior Vivian Browne, being thankful is a part of her daily life, and not just around Thanksgiving time.

Exactly 30 students from Central had the opportunity to travel to the NCYC conference (National Catholic Youth Conference) in Indianapolis this month. Browne attended the one week conference. At the conference attendees went to concerts, participated in mass, and listened to inspirational keynote speakers who preached students to love and take care of themselves, and to cherish their faith.

“The NCYC experience is a pretty phenomenal one,” said Browne. “You meet so many new people and bring already existing relationships closer. This experience has helped me put more trust in myself, but also reminded me that I can reach out for help whenever I need it.” Added Browne, “I’m so grateful for that reminder.” Browne also goes on to say that the people there are so encouraging and positive. She was very thankful for this experience.

“I’m thankful for the relationships that have developed over the years, and how helpful and encouraging those people I have built relationships with are,” stated Browne. In addition, she is thankful for all of the people she has met through this experience.

Browne said she has much to be grateful for. This trip was an eye-opener to all things she appreciated. Regardless of your faith, Thanksgiving time is the time to show appreciation. We may not all show it the same way either. You are allowed to express yourself however you believe is appropriate. However, for this Thanksgiving, I challenge you to tell someone how much you appreciate them. Or if words just are not your thing, show them how you appreciate them. Actions can speak louder than words. Here are a few ways you can show your gratitude:

1. Tell someone daily how much you appreciate them

2. Send thank-you notes to anyone you appreciate

3. Make sure to always say “thank you” in the lunch line to the lunch ladies

4. If you see a custodian or anyone on maintenance make sure to tell them how much you appreciate them

5. Give back to your school and community

6. Savor the good moments

7. Most importantly, reward yourself for making an effort
