Spring break varies every year, sometimes we get a few days, and every once in awhile, we get lucky with a whole week off from school to take a breather and relax from the crazy chaos of high school. Some families have planned for months to travel to the coasts and sunbathe on beaches, and others will enjoy a staycation and spend their time here. Either way, a week off is plenty of time to experience new things and have some fun, it’s just about answering the never ending question of our lives… “What’re we going to do?”
GET OUTSIDE
Although the weather won’t be at it’s prime over the week of spring break, the mid 40s and 50s are something we definitely aren’t used to and should take advantage of! Get a few friends together and walk your dogs, dig out your fishing poles for an adventure out on the lake, or dust off your bikes and go out on the Westbrook trails. Even something as simple as playing catch outside, exploring your backyard, or admiring the sunset can turn into something fun! A little bit of Vitamin D and fresh air won’t hurt anyone after being cooped up in our houses for the past few months!

TAKE A TRIP WITH FRIENDS & FAMILY
Whether you’ve had a vacation planned for awhile or you decide to take a spontaneous day trip to a nearby adventure, traveling is a great way to spend your time. Cheap flights are a great start when planning a trip through CID or MLI where you can easily put together an unplanned getaway! Or head out to Dubuque to admire the Mines of Spain or take a day trip to Galena, IL to explore their shops and historical sites. Introducing yourself to new areas and cultures by experiencing them hands on can be eye-opening, and doing it the whole time with a good friend by your side makes it even better.
STUDY UP
As unappealing as this might sound, studying up and preparing for the ACTs or catching up on some classes will serve you well in the future. Put aside an hour of your free time everyday over spring break to do something that will benefit your academics for the last few months! Don’t be afraid to set down the remote and invite your friends to venture over to your favorite coffee shop and hit the books in order to set yourself up for success!

SPEND TIME WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS
Plan throwback movie marathons and fun nights out with the people you feel closest to, it’s a great way to spend time and bond with the people you’re always around. Whether you guys decide to stay in for the night or you head out, you’re sure to have some fun! Within the warmth of your home, you can watch movies, bake sweet treats (or even a homemade pizza), or lean into the creative side of your minds and sculpt pottery or concoct some slime. Or, you can head out of the town to watch a local musical, go shopping, or even burn off some energy at Helium, giving you an exciting way to enjoy your time off with good friends and family members!
DO SOMETHING FOR YOURSELF
Most of the time during our regular school year there’s not a lot of time to practice self care. Whether it’s curling up to a good read or heading out to for a run, all of this free time is perfect to fill these slots. Sign up for a fitness class at Orangetheory in Davenport to burn some calories or talk to the librarian or your favorite LA teacher for some quality books. You can even research where there are live readings from some of your favorite authors in Iowa City!
